Episode III: Proteus

Joyce begins this episode with the “Ineluctable modality of the visible,”  a line that sets the stage for a complex exploration of Stephen Dedalus’s thoughts. As an aspiring poet, Stephen is by far Joyce’s most intellectual character. His stream of consciousness is not only rich in its English vocabulary, but diverse in its use of foreign languages.

Paul Muldoon – Stephen Dedalus

Episode IV: Calypso

The fourth episode of Ulysses introduces our protagonist with the line “Mr. Leopold Bloom ate with relish the inner organs of beasts and fowls.” The episode follows Bloom’s actions and thoughts on the morning of June 16, 1904 while he talks with his cat, walks to the butcher, makes breakfast for his wife, eats a kidney and uses the toilet.

Anne Enright – Narrator
Wallace Shawn – Leopold Bloom
Caraid O’Brien – Molly Bloom
Marie-Louise Bowe – the Cat
John O’Callaghan – Mr. O’Rourke

Episode XVIII: Penelope

Molly Bloom’s unspoken nighttime soliloquy in the final episode of Ulysses is one of the most respected insights into the female mind in all of literature. Her uninterrupted reflections on life, love, sex and marriage reveal the inner workings of Joyce’s amazing creation that is Molly Bloom.

Caraid O’Brien – Molly Bloom
